Glycolic acid is an organic compound with the formula C2H4O3. It is a colorless and easy to fall off crystal, with a certain hygroscopicity. Between 78-79°C, it has a low melting point and is soluble in solvents such as water, methanol, ethanol, acetone, acetic acid, ethyl acetate, and ether, but almost insoluble in carbon-based solvents. Glycolic acid has the characteristics of low corrosivity, non-combustible, tasteless, low toxicity, strong biodegradability, high water solubility, and is a kind of organic composite product with almost no volatilization. Because it contains carboxylic and hydroxyl groups, it has the dual properties of carboxylic acid and alcohol, good reactivity, strong permeability, and good water solubility. Therefore, glycolic acid is widely used in chemical cleaning, daily chemical industry and other fields, and can also be used to polymerize monomers to synthesize or modify degradable plastics.
